The South is the only region in Brazil with four distinct seasons. This charming countryside has a climate similar to that of Europe. The terrain consists mostly of forest-covered mountains, flat plains and numerous beautiful white, sandy beaches. Only the highest elevations receive snow in winter. Much of the culture, customs, dress and cuisine of the German and Italian immigrants who came to Brazil in the late nineteenth century have been retained, which gives this region a distinct European flavor. This is also the site of the world-famous Iguassu Falls, which has been declared one of the natural wonders of the world. Temperatures in the South average between forty-five and seventy-five degrees from May to September and from sixty to eighty degrees the remainder of the year. The average rainfall is fifty inches per year.
